Overberg

There’s lots to do in the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area.

But the Agulhas Plain and broader Overberg is a wonderful tourism destination, and there are activities here to entertain everyone.

OVERBERG

Here are some tips of things to do in the Overberg:

See the beautiful Agulhas National Park, a partner of the NWSMA. And stay in some of their wonderful accommodation, like the Agulhas Rest Camp.

Visit the Agulhas Lighthouse, and stroll on to the most southerly tip of Africa in Agulhas.

Pop in at the Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp – a tribute to the Cape of Storms, and the many ships (more than 130 vessels) that have been wrecked along this coastline (like the famous Arniston). It includes fascinating stories of wrecks and salvaging.

Stop in at De Hoop Nature Reserve. This is an ideal venue to enjoy whale watching, while the reserve is home to the Cape Montain Zebra and bontebok.

Birders shouldn’t miss the De Mond Nature Reserve. The reserve includes the mouth of the Heuningnes River (a Ramsar site), connected to the Nuwejaars River. It’s also a World Heritage Site. Look out for the Damara Tern.

The fisherman’s village at Arniston/Waenhuiskrans is a great day out in the Overberg. Not to mention the wonderful beaches here.

See the extremely endangered African penguin on a boat trip to Dyer Island, just outside Gansbaai.

Majestic whales can be seen from the Overberg’s coast – including Hermanus, Struisbaai, Agulhas and Arniston.
