Every day we
Showcase the area

Objective 6: Building support for conservation through outreach and education
SHOWCASING OUR NATURAL WORLD
At the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area (NWSMA), we believe that conservation success depends not only on what we do on the ground, but also on how well we communicate our impact, engage our partners and inspire others to care.
Objective 6 of our Biodiversity Management Plan focuses on strategic communication, marketing and fundraising – ensuring that our story reaches the right people, in the right way.
By promoting our work to members, stakeholders, the public and the broader conservation community, we strengthen support for our mission and open doors for long-term sustainability.
Stakeholder & partner communication: Strength in collaboration
Strategic communication is the backbone of partnership-building. That’s why we’ve committed to:
- A comprehensive communications strategy and action plan.
- Monitoring the effectiveness of our communication efforts, and adjusting for greater reach and relevance.
- Building strong relationships with key role players, including government and strategic partners.
Environmental education: Inspiring the next generation
We’re cultivating a culture of conservation by fostering awareness, especially among young people. Our work includes:
- Implementing an environmental education plan for school children, focused on the region’s unique biodiversity.
- Measuring impact and effectiveness, to guide improvement.
- Using tools like iNaturalist to bring learning to life through citizen science.

Honouring our heritage
The Agulhas Plain, and more specifically the Nuweaars Wetlands, are rich not only in biodiversity – but in history and culture, too. We aim to:
- Capture stories and historical records, through interviews and archival research.
- And to showcase our heritage treasures.
By building awareness and telling our story well, we create a community that values and supports conservation.
