One hundred and fourteen bird species. That’s not bad for a day spent criss-crossing the Nuwejaars Special Management Area, in search of as many different bird species as we could find. The Nuwejaars team would not miss out on the chance to join Birdlife South Africa’s Big Birding Day 2018. We focused our efforts on the Nuwejaars (although we took a short detour to the Agulhas Plains saltpans).

For birders heading to the Nuwejaars SMA, here are some of the species you REALLY should look out for during your next trip (as seen during Big Birding Day).

Our 3 most fun bird species:

  • Pied avocet
  • Glossy ibis
  • Great white pelican

The 3 best sightings (including regional rarities):

  • Black cuckoo
  • Hottentot teal
  • Martial eagle

The prettiest birds on the day:

  • Paradise flycatcher
  • Orange breasted sunbird
  • Red bishop

The best pics for the day:

  • Barn owl
  • Pelicans
  • Red capped lark

And what we missed (and remain concerned about given the few sightings):

  • Southern black korhaan
  • Hottentot buttonquail
  • Grass owl

Thanks to Birdlife South Africa for organising this great day (the best excuse to enjoy the natural landscapes, wetlands and rivers in our special area).
